Sam Gales Bio
My work is rooted in my interracial identity and reflects my upbringing in a family with interracial generations. Being perceived as 'exotic' feels like a generational curse, as racial ambiguity is often fetishized in a world that still views Western culture as white and European in origin. I have grown up with the feeling of always being on the looking in, as if I exist at an infinite crossroads within myself. In my work, I attempt to capture the interstitial space that defines me in various ways. I often begin each piece with a black and white color palette, which is with a mixture of vibrant colors as additional layers in depth. I also incorporate visual elements mixed with written language to describe scenes where both real and surreal imagery coexist. Lastly, freely negotiate the space between the second and third dimensions. Everything exists in the in-between, and that condition is too often 'exoticized' by the white gaze.

As I grow older, I find myself changing and struggling to keep up with the proverbial "rat race." Viewers will often find themes of age, mental distress, and a growing sense of apathy throughout my work.

I do also enjoy getting to make bright and colorful things, even with some macabre elements. Art is my journal and I draw whatever I am thinking of, dreaming of, or listening to at the time.

What Do I do?
Though I’m a person of many trades, these are the areas I focus on full time in addition to creating art.

Senior designer, framer, and print specialist
Instructor
For over a year and a half, I have been working at a frame shop, where I have had the opportunity to build community, create connections with the art world, and design one-of-a-kind creations. I also design and print my artworks for my small business, Salmon Roe.
I have taught many classes, including as a City Arts instructor, a workshop instructor at Andover Public Library, and a instructor at Butler Community College.
Freelance work and small business
I have helped local and larger businesses with murals and repair projects. I am currently working on a large mural project for the City of Wichita. I also co-own a small business, Salmon Roe, where we create and sell our own art.
